Blood test proven to ‘detect cancer earlier and reduce deaths’

A recent study conducted by the University of St Andrews School of Medicine has revealed that a simple blood test could potentially lead to a significant reduction in deaths from lung cancer. The study suggests that testing for specific biomarkers in the blood of individuals at high risk of lung cancer could enable earlier detection of the disease, ultimately resulting in a major decrease in mortality rates.

Lung cancer is often diagnosed in its later stages when symptoms become noticeable, making treatment less effective and survival rates low. The study involved 12,208 smokers and ex-smokers between the ages of 50 and 75 who were considered to be at high risk of developing lung cancer. Participants were divided into two groups, with one group undergoing regular screening for abnormal autoantibodies using the EarlyCDT-Lung test, while the control group received standard clinical care without the autoantibody testing. Over a five-year period, the study found a significant reduction in deaths from all causes, including lung cancer, among those who underwent the biomarker test compared to the control group.

The researchers stressed the importance of early detection in improving survival rates and reducing mortality from lung cancer. They also noted that early-stage lung cancer is more manageable and that timely detection can lead to more cost-effective treatment options. The innovative blood test used in the study can measure up to seven autoantibodies, providing a promising avenue for future research into other detectable biomarkers using different types of samples.
