Plans have been submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council for the construction of a massive solar farm near Kirkcudbright. The proposed Little Drum Solar Farm would encompass around 75,000 solar panels and have the capacity to produce 36MW of electricity. Developers Grupotec anticipate that if the project is given the green light, it could deliver over £900,000 in community benefits over a 40-year period.
Grupotec, in partnership with REG Power Developments, initially introduced the plans for the solar farm last year, conducting public consultations in Kirkcudbright. They have now progressed by formally applying for permission to develop a 75-acre plot situated southeast of the town. In addition to the solar panels, the farm would also feature 12 megawatts of battery storage, aiming to power approximately 11,000 households.
The community benefit fund associated with the project is expected to reach £23,000 annually, totalling more than £900,000 over the intended lifespan of the venture. Development manager Tim Mockridge has confirmed plans for an active habitat management strategy to support biodiversity. Local businesses are projected to be involved in the construction phase, offering job opportunities once the solar farm is operational.
