Popular Kirkcudbright Cafe Closes Permanently as Owners Bid Customers ‘Fond Farewell’
A beloved cafe in Kirkcudbright has closed its doors for good, as the owners of The Belfry on St Mary Street have made the tough decision not to reopen this year. The cafe shut down on December 20 for the Christmas break, and although the closure was initially meant to be temporary, it has now been confirmed that the cafe will not be reopening at all.
In a heartfelt message shared on the cafe’s Facebook page, the owners expressed their gratitude and sadness, saying, “The time has come to say a fond farewell. It’s not been the easiest of decisions but we are not reopening. It has been an amazing seven years, and I will never forget all the wonderful people I have met, and all the fun we’ve had.”
The post went on to acknowledge the incredible team that worked at the cafe, highlighting the joy of laughter and camaraderie that was shared. The closure of The Belfry marks the end of an era for many loyal customers who frequented the cafe over the years.
In a bittersweet turn of events, another restaurant in Dumfries and Galloway is also set to close as the owners embark on a new venture. The Old Schoolhouse near Ringford will be closing on February 28, with plans to open a new establishment, Rosava’s in Castle Douglas, on March 4. The decision to close The Old Schoolhouse was made as running both sites simultaneously proved to be unfeasible.
Rosava’s will be located at the King Street site, previously known as The Scottish Pantry, before Shirley and Brian Haining’s retirement in 2024. While it is always sad to see beloved establishments close their doors, it is also an opportunity for new beginnings and fresh adventures in the culinary world.
As the community bids farewell to The Belfry and The Old Schoolhouse, there is a sense of nostalgia for the memories made and the special moments shared within those walls. While change may bring about endings, it also paves the way for new opportunities, experiences, and cherished connections in the future.
