A Romanian grooming gang has been found guilty of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Dundee, culminating in their conviction for a total of 30 offenses at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday, January 9. The gang, comprising four men and one woman – Marian Cumpanasoiu, Remus Stan, Catalan Dobre, Cristian Urlateanu, and Alexandra Bugonea – also faced charges related to drug supply. They are awaiting sentencing at a later date.
The group was apprehended following an extensive investigation by Police Scotland under Operation Recloir, a concerted effort to crack down on a suspected human trafficking network in the Tayside area. It was revealed that women from Eastern Europe were being coerced into prostitution through gifts and drugs, highlighting a disturbing trend of exploitation and abuse.
During the trial, Judge Lord Scott condemned the gang for perpetrating a “horrifying sequence of sexual abuse and exploitation against vulnerable, predominantly young women.” Notably, Urlateanu, Dobre, and Bugonea attempted to evade justice by fleeing the country but were eventually traced and extradited back to Scotland.
