A knife-wielding teenager has managed to avoid custody following a shop robbery in East Kilbride. Dylan McCrae, 18, was sentenced to 18 months of supervision and 140 hours of unpaid community work at Hamilton Sheriff Court. McCrae, residing on Lancaster Crescent, East Kilbride, confessed to assault and robbery at the Co-op in Main Street, East Kilbride, on September 22, 2023.
The incident unfolded at around 9.20pm when McCrae’s accomplice entered the Co-op, grabbed two bottles of Buckfast, bypassed the payment counter, and headed towards the exit. A staff member intervened, trying to retrieve the bottles, leading to a confrontation. McCrae then entered the shop, brandishing a knife at the staff member and escalating the situation.
Despite the staff member’s attempts to defuse the tension, McCrae demanded the return of his friend’s hat, shouting and gesturing aggressively. After retrieving the hat, McCrae and his accomplice left the store. Another teenager involved in the incident had previously admitted to stealing wine from the same store and was sentenced to a one-year supervision order.
