Stuart Hogg’s wife spent nights ‘wishing for morning so he’d sober up’ during five year abuse campaign

Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg’s ex-wife, Gillian Hogg, endured nights of fear and anxiety, wishing for the morning to arrive so that Stuart would sober up during a five-year campaign of abuse. Stuart Hogg was sentenced at Selkirk Sheriff Court, where he received a Community Payback Order with one year of supervision as an alternative to custody under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act. The court imposed a five-year non-harassment order, prohibiting him from contacting his former partner.

During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Stuart Hogg would frequently shout and use offensive language towards his estranged wife, criticising her for not being ‘fun’. Gillian Hogg recounted feeling scared and hoping for the mornings to come quickly so that Stuart would sober up and the abuse would cease. Additionally, Hogg was found to have monitored his ex-partner’s movements using a mobile app, sent distressing messages, and breached bail conditions by approaching her.

While the prosecution highlighted the impact of domestic abuse on victims and the importance of seeking justice, Stuart Hogg was acknowledged for his services to rugby with an MBE. Despite retiring from professional rugby in 2023, he made a comeback last summer by signing with Montpellier on a two-year contract.

The case involving Stuart Hogg sheds light on the prevalence of domestic abuse and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions. It is crucial for victims to speak out and seek support to break the cycle of abuse and ensure a safe environment for themselves and their children.
