Bathgate Mums Lead Efforts to Ensure Families Have a Memorable Day
Two dedicated mums from Bathgate, Deborah Gemmell, 43, and Lorna Brown, 40, along with a team of volunteers, have been instrumental in providing families across West Lothian with a Christmas Day feast at no cost. Their initiative, For the Greater Good, has been raising funds for several years to distribute food hampers and gifts to those facing financial difficulties during the festive season.
Deborah initially launched a social media page for the campaign, which gained remarkable traction over the years. Last year, Lorna joined forces with Deborah to expand their efforts, resulting in the provision of even more hampers and dinners to hundreds of people in need. With the support of around 70 volunteers, they managed to distribute 131 hampers to families this year, along with additional treats and shopping vouchers.
Reflecting on the growth of the project, Deborah shared, “It’s not just for people on benefits – working people are struggling as well.” The duo managed to raise an impressive £15,000 this year, which was used to purchase Christmas dinners from LQ Meats in Livingston. Additionally, they bought vouchers and other food items to supplement the hampers.
Beyond the festive season, Deborah and Lorna have also kept funds aside to assist individuals throughout the year. They made a heartwarming gesture of spreading cheer in Bathgate town centre by distributing Christmas cards with money to random individuals as a special treat.
