A local public inquiry might be held due to objections raised against the proposed Grangemouth Flood Protection Scheme, as reported by the Daily Record. The scheme, if approved, would be the largest in Scotland and is estimated to cost around £450 million. Among the objectors are RSPB Scotland and Forth Ports, expressing concerns about the current plans for building flood defences.

RSPB Scotland, which operates a reserve near Skinflats, has criticised the scheme, stating a lack of information to assess its potential impact on the local protected area. They also highlight the need for considering alternative and sustainable flood management solutions instead of solely relying on concrete walls. Forth Ports, a major employer in the area, is wary of the scheme’s impact on its daily operations and future projects.

In addition, local businesses like BOC Ltd and Jarvie Plant, as well as homeowners near the proposed site, have raised objections regarding the intrusive nature and potential disruptions caused by the flood protection wall. Despite engaging with affected parties, with only 20 objections out of the thousands consulted, the council is deliberating the next steps for the scheme.

The Grangemouth area, hosting significant industries crucial to Scotland’s economy, is in need of flood protection as climate change increases the risk of flooding. The proposed scheme aims to safeguard numerous residential and commercial properties from severe flood events, aligning with SEPA and Scottish Government priorities for flood protection initiatives.
