Avalanche horror as three skiers die after being dragged several hundred metres

Three skiers tragically lost their lives today after being caught in a devastating avalanche while skiing in Italy’s northern Piedmont region. The group of five skiers was struck by the avalanche on the eastern face of Punta Valgrande, a summit on the Italy-Switzerland border. The avalanche dragged three skiers several hundred meters downhill, resulting in fatal injuries for the victims. The other two skiers survived and were airlifted to a hospital for treatment, as reported by the Mirror.

An alert warning of a “considerable danger of avalanches” had been issued in the area above 6,900 feet (2,100 meters) prior to the tragic incident. Witnesses described seeing the avalanche tear down the mountain, sweeping people off the slope. The Alpine rescue team quickly responded to the scene, providing assistance to the survivors. While the current condition of the survivors is unknown, they are receiving medical care for injuries sustained during the avalanche.

The area where the avalanche occurred, in the Lepontine Alps, has been classified as having a third-degree avalanche risk level, indicating a high risk of winter avalanches. Poor weather conditions in the region have been cited as a possible contributing factor to the tragedy. Authorities are advising caution and urging individuals to avoid hazardous areas in the mountains.

This heartbreaking incident comes on the heels of another tragic avalanche at the Palandoken Ski Center in Erzurum, North-East Turkey, where a rising judo star named Emre Yazgan lost his life. Emre was a part of Turkey’s National Judo Team and his untimely death has deeply saddened the community. Efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful, despite the best attempts of rescue teams at the popular ski resort.

As winter sports enthusiasts continue to enjoy the slopes during the ski season, it is essential to remain vigilant and heed all safety warnings to prevent further tragedies like these from occurring.
