Mum’s final days of torment with monster boyfriend before suicide

A young mother’s tragic final days have been brought to light, detailing the torment she endured at the hands of her abusive partner before taking her own life. Kiena Dawes, a 23-year-old mother, had aspirations of living a cheerful life but instead found herself entangled in a web of pain, abuse, and fear with her partner, Ryan Wellings. In July 2022, Kiena tragically died by suicide, leaving a heart-wrenching note pointing the blame at Wellings for relentlessly “torturing” her until she felt there was nothing left.

The trial at Preston Crown Court on January 13 found Wellings guilty of the manslaughter of Kiena, along with assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. Described as a “monster” who initially “swept her off her feet,” Wellings’ behaviour escalated quickly in their relationship. Reports revealed instances of physical assaults, threats of violence, and coercive control that haunted Kiena’s every day. The prosecution highlighted Wellings’ exploitation of Kiena’s vulnerabilities, including her mental health struggles, to manipulate and abuse her.

Throughout their tumultuous relationship, Kiena’s loved ones witnessed the distress she endured, with her mother urging her to distance herself from Wellings as the fairytale romance turned into a nightmare. Despite facing numerous instances of violence, threats, and manipulation, Kiena felt trapped and controlled by Wellings, ultimately ending in her tragic decision to take her own life.

The courtroom drama unfolded with testimonies revealing the extent of Wellings’ abusive behaviour, including physical assaults, demeaning remarks, and threats of disfigurement. Kiena’s family, friends, and even law enforcement agencies were unable to shield her from the relentless abuse she faced, despite attempts to seek help and justice.

As the trial exposed the grim reality of Kiena’s life leading up to her untimely death, questions were raised about the support and protection she should have received. Wellings, in his defence, denied being a “monster” but admitted to being “heavy-handed” with Kiena, downplaying the severity of his actions. Kiena’s poignant suicide note served as a chilling testimony to the anguish and suffering she endured, with a plea for her daughter to be kept safe from the man she saw as her killer.

The devastating tale of Kiena Dawes sheds light on the harrowing experiences faced by victims of domestic abuse and the challenges they encounter in seeking safety and justice. It underscores the critical need for increased awareness, support, and intervention to prevent such tragic outcomes from recurring in society.

In conclusion, Kiena Dawes’ story serves as a stark reminder of the insidious nature of domestic violence and the profound impact it can have on individuals’ lives. It highlights the importance of recognising the signs of abuse, offering support to those in need, and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. May her legacy inspire efforts to combat domestic violence and create a safer, more compassionate world for all.
