The novel depicts a dystopian society under constant surveillance and totalitarian control, with the coin’s reverse side showcasing a camera lens cleverly disguised as an eye, symbolising themes of surveillance and control.
Artist Henry Grey has intricately crafted the design, with the quote “Big Brother is watching you” encircling the camera lens. Another quote from the novel, “There was truth and there was untruth,” is inscribed on the coin’s edge. The Royal Mint has previously honoured authors like JRR Tolkien, Jane Austen, and William Shakespeare with £2 coins.
George Orwell, also known as Eric Blair, used his writings to shed light on social injustices and challenge norms.
