A care assistant who caused severe injuries to a nine-week-old baby by violently shaking him has been sentenced to jail and prohibited from contacting the victim. Jose Herreros, 26, admitted to grabbing the baby boy and shaking him, resulting in 11 fractured bones in his ribs and legs. The shocking incident came to light when a health worker observed bruises on the baby’s face during a home visit and advised seeking medical attention.
During his appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Herreros pleaded guilty to assaulting the child, causing severe injury and endangering his life. Sheriff Christopher Dickson described the offence as very serious, stating that a custodial sentence was the appropriate punishment. Herreros was sentenced to 21 months in prison and received a three-year non-harassment order preventing any contact with the child.
