Three lynx that were illegally released in the Highlands are reportedly “doing well”, according to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). Last week, four lynx were abandoned near Kingussie, leading to a search operation. Two of the lynx were spotted by members of the public in Dell, Killiehuntly, near the Cairngorms on January 8. The RZSS confirmed that the animals were captured in pairs on Friday night but sadly, one of the lynx passed away overnight.
The RZSS mentioned that the remaining three lynx, now in quarantine at Edinburgh Zoo, are in good health. They have not disclosed details about the deceased lynx as the incident is under police investigation. The cause of death is still unknown. The society expressed confidence that there are no other lynx at large and investigations into the release of the animals are ongoing.
Following their capture, the lynx were initially taken to the Highland Wildlife Park before being transferred to Edinburgh Zoo for quarantine. Conservation experts criticised the irresponsible act of releasing the animals into the wild without proper preparation. Dr. Neil Anderson from Edinburgh University highlighted the potential negative impact on future lynx reintroduction efforts due to such actions.
Police Scotland confirmed that inquiries are ongoing regarding the incident. The RZSS stressed the importance of regulated and controlled reintroduction processes for endangered species like lynx to ensure their well-being and the preservation of ecosystems.
