Livingston MP Supports Five Sisters Zoo for Great British Wildlife Restoration Award
Livingston MP Gregor Poynton has thrown his support behind West Calder’s Five Sisters Zoo (FSZ) as they vie for the Great British Wildlife Restoration Award. This esteemed accolade, voted on by MPs and Peers, will be presented at a special parliamentary reception in Speaker’s House in Westminster on January 21.
During a recent visit to the zoo in West Calder, Mr Poynton engaged with Veselina Alvas, Head Keeper, and Gary Curran, Head of Carnivores and Site Management, to delve into FSZ’s significant contributions to conservation and community engagement. The discussion brought to light FSZ’s innovative Eurasian Beaver Translocation Project, a pioneering initiative aimed at reintroducing this indigenous species to habitats throughout the UK.
Mr Poynton commended the Five Sisters Zoo for its outstanding efforts in wildlife conservation, community enrichment, and economic development. He emphasised the zoo’s dedication to the translocation of Eurasian beavers, essential for ecosystem sustainability, as a shining example of successful collaboration and innovation. The MP expressed his delight in supporting FSZ’s work and pledged to continue advocating for their initiatives in Parliament. He also extended his best wishes to Five Sisters Zoo as they prepare for the upcoming awards ceremony.
Since 2019, in partnership with the Beaver Trust and NatureScot, FSZ has relocated over 200 beavers from conflict zones to safe release sites across England, Wales, and Scotland. These endeavours not only foster genetic diversity but also promote rewilding, fostering healthier ecosystems for future generations. The conservation efforts of FSZ play a pivotal role in bolstering tourism and environmental progress in the Livingston constituency.
The support and recognition from Livingston MP Gregor Poynton underscore the invaluable contributions of institutions like the Five Sisters Zoo in safeguarding wildlife and enhancing local communities. As the zoo continues to spearhead impactful conservation projects, its commitment to biodiversity preservation serves as a commendable model for conservationists and nature enthusiasts alike.
In conclusion, the collaboration between politicians like Livingston MP Gregor Poynton and conservation institutions such as Five Sisters Zoo exemplifies the synergy needed to drive positive change in wildlife preservation and environmental sustainability. Through unwavering dedication and strategic partnerships, significant strides can be made towards safeguarding endangered species and promoting ecological balance for future generations.
