Retired Scots Lecturer Scammed £17k in Advanced AI Romance Scam
A retired Scots lecturer has fallen victim to a sophisticated AI romance scam, losing a whopping £17,000 in the process. Nikki MacLeod, a former neuroscience lecturer from Edinburgh, shared her harrowing experience of being conned by an online scammer who posed as a romantic partner using AI-generated videos.
The elaborate scam unfolded over several months, involving fake documents, deepfake videos, and fabricated stories aimed at gaining Nikki’s trust. It all began when Nikki met someone claiming to be “Ala Morgan” on Facebook. Despite initial suspicions and the mysteriously disappearing first profile, Nikki developed a close relationship with a new profile under the same name.
Engaging in conversations across various social media platforms, Nikki received convincing videos from “Ala” that further solidified her belief in their relationship. The scammer even went as far as creating a backstory of working on an oil rig in the Aegean Sea to justify asking for money. The initial request for £2,500 was followed by a demand for an additional £12,000 to cover supposed holiday expenses in Scotland.
The scam heightened when “Ala” offered to transfer £65,000 to help Nikki’s daughter with house-hunting, only for Nikki to discover the bank account was fake after her own account was frozen. Despite losing £17,000, Nikki managed to recover around £7,000 with the help of her bank and PayPal.
What made this scam particularly convincing was the use of AI-generated videos that personalised messages for Nikki, creating a sense of authenticity. Reflecting on the ordeal, Nikki emphasised the loneliness that made her vulnerable and advised others never to send money to individuals online without meeting them in person.
The scam serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online deception and the importance of staying vigilant to protect oneself from falling prey to such sophisticated fraudulent schemes.
