A mother from Scotland was left devastated after falling victim to a cruel hacker who scammed her out of thousands of pounds by infiltrating her online accounts. Leanne Cherrie, 36, residing in Dalkeith, found herself in financial distress after cybercriminals hacked into her email and cleared her bank account, leaving just 33p behind. This heart-wrenching incident occurred after her 10-year-old son lost his father in December 2023, and the money taken included his inheritance.
The nightmare began on January 2 when Leanne received messages from friends alerting her to suspicious activities on her Facebook account, which she had deactivated months earlier. Upon trying to access her streaming service subscriptions for her children, she realised she had been locked out of those accounts as well. After realising the extent of the breach, Leanne recounted, “My bank account had been wiped, accounts were gone, and I realised that I’d lost everything, including my boy’s money after his dad died.”
Following the incident, Leanne took immediate action by contacting the police and freezing her bank accounts. Despite these measures, the inquiry into the fraud is ongoing, and there is uncertainty regarding the possibility of recovering the stolen funds. Furthermore, the hackers threatened Leanne with exposing her personal photos and videos unless she paid them 1,600 in Bitcoin within 48 hours.
Suspecting that the hackers gained access to her accounts while using public WiFi, Leanne emphasised the importance of enhanced cybersecurity practices. She advised others to avoid public WiFi networks, frequently change passwords, and refrain from using similar passwords across different platforms to mitigate the risk of cyber fraud.
In the wake of this distressing experience, Leanne has resorted to relying on food banks and welfare support from the council. Reflecting on the incident, she expressed deep concern for her son and highlighted the emotional toll of the scam.
