**Toddler in Desperate Need of Heart Transplant After Viral Infection**
A young toddler named Aalayah Stewart is currently residing at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, awaiting a new heart after a common virus left her critically ill. The three-year-old from Newarthill near Motherwell has been in the hospital for 10 months, supported by a mechanical pump known as a Berlin heart that is temporarily fulfilling the role of her failing organ.
Aalayah’s ordeal began when she fell seriously ill in December 2022 due to a viral infection called RSV that attacked her heart, leading to a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart muscles. She was placed on a ventilator and an Ecmo device to assist her heart’s function. While she showed signs of improvement initially, a cardiac arrest in March 2024 at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow led to further complications.
Since then, Aalayah’s parents, Thomas and Kelly, have been by her side, taking turns to be with her at the hospital. The family longs for Aalayah to come back home and experience the normal life every child deserves. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Aalayah continues to display immense strength and resilience, inspiring her family and the medical team caring for her.
Thomas Stewart, Aalayah’s father, has initiated an online fundraiser to acquire a physio machine, costing £38,000, to aid Aalayah in her journey to regain her ability to walk.
