Would-be Robber Leaves Empty-Handed After Failed Robbery Attempt in Hamilton
A failed robbery attempt in Hamilton left a would-be robber, Steven Thomson, empty-handed after he was told there was no cash to hand over at the time of the attempted robbery. Thomson, 36, from Cambuslang, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted to the attempted robbery at R&W Boyd newsagent in Quarry Street on September 26, 2023.
Thomson entered the newsagent around 7 am with a hood over his head and approached the counter, demanding £40 from the female shop assistant. When she informed him that there was no money available as the shop had just opened, Thomson threatened to “blast everything” if she didn’t comply. Despite the threat, Thomson left the shop without any money. Fortunately, there was no weapon involved in the incident, and Thomson was later traced by the police in Quarry Street.
An allegation that Thomson had also demanded money from a female employee at a nearby Greggs on the same day by brandishing a bottle was dropped. The prosecutor, Scott O’Connor, revealed that Thomson’s behaviour was described as bizarre and strange by the shop assistant in her police statement. Thomson’s defence solicitor, Jackson Bateman, mentioned that Thomson had been struggling following a relationship breakdown but has been trying to get his life back on track since the incident.
Sheriff John Speir deferred Thomson’s sentence for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment until next month. Despite the attempted robbery, there are no outstanding cases against Thomson at the moment. The shop assistant’s quick thinking and calm response helped avert a potentially dangerous situation during the attempted robbery.
