Man Arrested for Possession of Knife, Claims to Have Taken it from Friend
A man was apprehended for carrying a knife and alleged that he had confiscated it from a friend who was contemplating self-harm. Jay Smith, aged 30, residing at Duneaton Wynd in Larkhall, appeared before Hamilton Sheriff Court. He pleaded guilty to unlawfully possessing a bladed item on McNeil Street in Larkhall on April 20 of the previous year. The court was informed that police officers were dispatched to the location following reports of a suspicious individual. Scott O’Connor, the prosecutor, stated that the officers noticed the accused, who seemed unsteady on his feet. Upon conducting a search, Smith disclosed to the officers that he was in possession of a knife, which was discovered in his jacket pocket.
Smith had a previous conviction for carrying a knife in public, but his defence agent, Jackson Bateman, explained that his client found himself in trouble this time due to trying to assist a friend. According to Mr. Bateman, while they were at a residence, Smith’s friend threatened self-harm, leading to an altercation where Smith seized the knife from him.
