Perth and Kinross Foodbank Launches Appeal as Cold Weather Takes Toll
Perth and Kinross Foodbank has issued an urgent appeal for support as the cold weather continues to impact the local community. The Foodbank’s manager, Lori Hughes, stated that this winter has been particularly challenging for many individuals and families relying on their services. The recent appeal comes in the wake of a call to action from Still Game actor Sanjeev Kohli, urging Scots to extend their support to food banks in the new year.
According to Charity Trussell, which oversees a network of 133 food bank locations in Scotland, the number of people experiencing hunger and hardship has reached record levels, with 670,000 individuals affected. This represents a 24% increase in the number of people requiring assistance in the past two decades. Throughout December 2024, Perth and Kinross Foodbank provided aid to 764 individuals, including 266 children, through 353 referrals. In total, 4,019 three-day emergency food parcels were distributed in 2024, feeding 7,692 people, with 881 first-time referrals. Perth City Centre saw the highest number of referrals, reflecting the widespread need in the area.
