Perthshire Soldier Who Escaped POW Camps Five Times Chronicled by Relative
A Perthshire soldier who made daring escapes from Prisoner of War (PoW) camps during World War II is being remembered and chronicled by his great-nephew. Piper Andrew Brand, a member of the 2nd Battalion of The Black Watch, famously attempted to escape six times before being shot and killed at a work camp in German-occupied Poland in August 1944.
Andrew Brand, born in Dunning in 1916, joined the Black Watch in 1935 and served in various conflicts before being captured by German forces in Crete in 1941. Throughout his time as a PoW, Brand repeatedly attempted to escape from different camps, earning a posthumous Mention in Dispatches (MiD) for distinguished action in the field in 1945.
His great-nephew, Alex Crawford, has taken on the task of researching Andrew Brand’s life and compiling a comprehensive record to be donated to Perth’s Black Watch Museum. Crawford, a retired service engineer, has obtained records detailing Brand’s numerous escape attempts and tragic death.
Crawford’s research sheds light on the bravery and determination displayed by Brand, who continued to resist captivity despite multiple setbacks. By uncovering and preserving Brand’s story, Crawford seeks to honour his great uncle’s memory and ensure that future generations remember his sacrifices.
As Crawford delves deeper into his family history, he aims to connect with other relatives who may provide additional insights into Andrew Brand’s life and military service.
