Paisley Thug Escapes Jail Time After Reckless Mercedes Chase with Police
A young perpetrator, Jan Mohammed, narrowly avoided a jail sentence after driving his mother’s Mercedes Benz recklessly through the streets of Paisley, endangering lives and striking a police officer in the leg. Mohammed, aged 19, drove at excessive speeds through multiple residential areas and even on the opposing carriageway in an attempt to evade the pursuing police officers.
The incident occurred when police officers on patrol in the Glenburn area spotted Mohammed’s Mercedes and attempted to pull him over due to a strong smell of cannabis emanating from the vehicle. Despite being signaled to stop by activating their blue lights, Mohammed fled the scene at high speed, leading the officers on a pursuit through various streets before coming to a stop in Manor Park Avenue.
Upon attempting to speak to Mohammed, one officer was struck by the accelerating vehicle, prompting Mohammed to flee the scene by mounting a kerb and grass verge. Authorities later traced the car to Shaz barbers in Glasgow, where Mohammed works and subsequently arrested him.
During his court appearance at Paisley Sheriff Court, Mohammed accepted his driving behaviour was unacceptable and acknowledged the danger he posed to the officer’s life. Despite his young age and immaturity, Mohammed had a previous conviction for dangerous driving and had recently been banned from driving for a similar offence in Glasgow Sheriff Court.
Sheriff Sheena Fraser, while acknowledging Mohammed’s immaturity, emphasized the seriousness of his actions and ordered him to perform 150 hours of unpaid work in the community. Additionally, Mohammed is to be supervised by the social work department for two years, wear a tag for 10 months, and face a further three-year driving ban.
