Dumfries and Galloway Charity Seeks Veterans for Employment Assistance
A charity in Dumfries and Galloway is on the lookout for veterans who are in need of support to re-enter the workforce. Southwest RNR is currently in possession of a substantial amount of funds earmarked for providing HGV training to former service personnel, paving the way for a new career path. However, there is a time constraint – the money must be utilised by the end of March, or it will be returned to the Scottish Government.
Robin Hood, the head of the charity residing near Mossdale, shared that there is £30,000 available for this initiative. This training programme offers the flexibility of online modules that can be completed from home, followed by practical training at Dumfries-based Nithcree. The course spans 10 days, during which participants are accommodated at a local bed and breakfast. “All they have to do is turn up,” Hood emphasised. The potential salary for a qualified lorry driver is around £38,000, making this opportunity a significant stepping stone for veterans.
Southwest RNR has successfully supported over 80 veterans in securing employment to date. Eligibility criteria for the programme include residency in Dumfries and Galloway, unemployment status, and a background in regular services or the Territorial Army, with a restriction of no more than six points on the driving licence. Interested individuals from anywhere in the region, spanning Langholm to Stranraer, can apply for the training programme.
