The extensive roadworks will entail temporary traffic lights, single lane closures, a reduction of speed limits to 30 miles per hour, and the installation of average speed cameras by Amey, the company responsible for carrying out the project. The closures of the A75 will force traffic from the busy Euroroute to be diverted through Dumfries town centre, increasing congestion on local roads.
An Amey spokesperson highlighted the benefits of the scheme, emphasizing that the improved safety of the carriageway will enhance the daily commute for vehicles and reduce the need for extensive maintenance in the future. Work is scheduled to commence on a Sunday, January 26, with nightly single lane closures and temporary traffic lights from January 28 to the projected completion date of April 28, between 7pm and 6am.
Additionally, a pedestrian footpath will be closed from March 16 to April 28, with temporary crossing points provided for pedestrians. During this period, a 30mph speed limit will be enforced with the use of average speed cameras along this section of the A75. Furthermore, there will be three total closures of the road on January 26-28, March 16-17, and April 27-28 from 7pm to 6am each night.
To navigate the closures, eastbound traffic will be directed to turn off at the Cuckoo Bridge roundabout onto Glasgow Road, Glasgow Street, and then follow a route through the town centre before reconnecting with the A75 at the Bloomfield Roundabout. Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion route in reverse during the road closures.
