The Lanthorn Centre in Livingston, a community hub that has been a staple for residents since 1978, has finally reopened its doors to the public after almost four years of closure due to structural issues. The closure was triggered by the discovery of deteriorating concrete planks in the roof structure back in April 2021. These concrete planks, known as RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete), are a lightweight form of concrete commonly used in construction during the 1950s to mid-1980s in the UK. Unfortunately, RAAC is less durable than reinforced concrete and can experience structural failure when exposed to moisture.
West Lothian Council spearheaded a project to address the roof deck issues at the Lanthorn Centre with the aim of ensuring the safety and integrity of the building. The council funded the removal and replacement of the roof deck, a critical step in restoring the facility to its former glory. Despite facing delays in the reopening process, a new contractor, Heron Bros, took charge of the project in April 2024 and made significant progress to expedite the repairs and renovations.
The prolonged closure of the Lanthorn Centre had left the building vulnerable to water damage during the winter months, further emphasising the urgency of completing the restoration work. While facing setbacks with the initial contractor awarded the project, the council remained committed to seeing the community centre restored to its full functionality. Following diligent efforts and perseverance, the centre, along with its library and café, welcomed visitors once again in January 2025.
Council Leader Lawrence Fitzpatrick expressed his delight at the reopening of the Lanthorn Centre, highlighting the council’s substantial investment to revive this vital community space. Moving forward, the centre is set to resume hosting a variety of events and activities to benefit the local residents, reaffirming its significance as a community hub in Livingston.
