Man left with agonising 30-hour erection awarded £41,000 after misdiagnosis

A man who endured a painful 30-hour erection due to a series of medical errors has been awarded £41,000 in compensation. The man, who is paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury, sought medical attention at the Ontinyent Hospital in Valencia after experiencing a prolonged erection following a bladder catheterisation. Despite his condition, he was discharged from the hospital twice without receiving adequate treatment.

The Valencian Community Legal Advisory Council in Valencia recognised the Department of Health’s negligence in providing late and insufficient care to the patient. The man’s suffering could have been significantly reduced if he had been treated promptly and effectively. His wife was also awarded £4,000 in compensation for the moral damages incurred due to the medical mishap.

After being discharged following his initial visit to the hospital, the man experienced excruciating pain for an additional 20 hours before returning for further treatment. He underwent a surgical procedure to drain his penis, which provided some relief. However, he was once again sent home instead of being admitted for observation.

Subsequently, the man had to return to the hospital for a third time as his condition worsened. He was then referred to a specialist in urology who provided him with the appropriate treatment for priapism. Despite undergoing surgical procedures, the man suffered lasting complications and had to have a penile prosthesis implanted.

The Valencian Community Legal Advisory Council ordered the Department of Health to pay €49,104 to the man for the medical malpractice and resulting serious consequences. Additionally, the Department was instructed to pay his wife €5,000 for the emotional distress caused by the ordeal.

In conclusion, this case highlights the importance of timely and accurate medical intervention in critical situations. Patients deserve to receive appropriate care to alleviate their suffering and prevent long-term complications. Healthcare providers must prioritise patient well-being and ensure that all individuals receive the necessary treatment without delay.
