New College Lanarkshire launches The Learning Well to address low numbers of adults with degrees in North Lanarkshire

New College Lanarkshire has recently introduced The Learning Well initiative to combat the low number of adults in North Lanarkshire with degrees. The aim of this ground-breaking effort is to offer adult learners the opportunity to study at home through an online platform while still receiving necessary support. With only 23.1% of individuals over the age of 16 in North Lanarkshire holding a degree-level qualification, which is the second lowest among Scottish council areas, this initiative seeks to bridge the educational gap.

The programme is accredited by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and aims to provide tailored and flexible learning opportunities to adult learners in North Lanarkshire. The Learning Well combines a dedicated online learning environment, experienced lecturers, a supportive community, personalised mentorship, and a curriculum that integrates practical and academic knowledge to ensure participants are equipped for success. The first course offered under this initiative is the BA in Business and Leadership, designed to equip learners with skills directly applicable in the workplace.

Professor Christopher Moore, the principal and CEO of New College Lanarkshire, expressed that The Learning Well goes beyond being just an educational platform – it serves as a lifeline for Lanarkshire adults who previously felt that higher education was unattainable. Participants like Victoria Fleeting have shared their excitement about the programme, highlighting the opportunity to develop skills in management and leadership conveniently through online learning. The 32-week online format allows for flexibility, making it convenient for individuals with family commitments.

The collaboration with UWS and the innovative approach of The Learning Well are set to empower individuals in Lanarkshire to access the education they deserve. By offering a way to pursue a degree that suits individual needs, New College Lanarkshire is making higher education more accessible and inclusive for all in the region. Through initiatives like The Learning Well, opportunities for continuous learning and skill development are being extended to a broader audience, ultimately contributing to the educational and professional growth of North Lanarkshire’s adult population.
