Over 3,300 instances of speeding were recorded on a section of the M80 motorway in Scotland over a period of just three months. The incidents occurred on a stretch of motorway where a temporary speed limit of 40mph was in effect due to repair works being carried out by BEAR Scotland on behalf of Transport Scotland. The captured drivers were found to be exceeding the temporary speed limit on the almost two-mile-long section of the M80, leading to concerns raised by motorists regarding the signage indicating the reduced limit.
The repair works were initiated to address subsidence issues on the slip road exiting the northbound M80 at Junction 9 in Bannockburn. The slip road had been closed in June for safety reasons following significant subsidence in the carriageway. To manage the traffic flow during the repair works, a temporary link road was constructed, which necessitated the enforcement of the 40mph speed limit using Police Scotland average speed cameras over a three-kilometre stretch from September to December last year.
One particular driver highlighted the lack of adequate signage in the area with the reduced speed limit, leading to them receiving two separate fines for exceeding the limit in a short period. Despite this complaint, Michael Grant, East Safety Camera Unit Manager, stated that a total of 3,337 offences were recorded during the enforcement period, and the signage scheme put in place was deemed satisfactory following consultation with Transport Scotland and BEAR Scotland.
BEAR Scotland, the agency responsible for the repair works, has been contacted for comment on the matter. The incident serves as a reminder for drivers to adhere to temporary speed limits and signage displayed during roadworks to ensure the safety of all road users.
