‘No plans’ to ban TikTok in the UK as block in US begins on Sunday

The UK government has confirmed that there are currently no plans to ban the popular social media platform TikTok in the country, amidst a looming ban set to take place in the United States on Sunday. This decision comes after TikTok lost a legal battle in the US to prevent a ban on the grounds of free speech. In April, US President Joe Biden signed a law requiring TikTok to separate its US business from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, citing national security concerns. Despite the UK’s stance, TikTok faces uncertainty in the US as the Supreme Court rejected their appeal, upholding the ban.

A spokesperson for the UK government stated, “This is a matter for the US government. There are no plans to introduce a TikTok ban in the UK.” The government reassured that they engage with major social media companies to ensure data security and cyber standards are met. While the Biden administration has hinted at not enforcing the ban, TikTok remains cautious and has warned of going dark unless clarity is provided. Concerns have been raised by content creators, users, and analysts about the potential repercussions of the ban.

TikTokers in the UK, like Tom Pratt from London, have expressed worries about the impact of a US ban on their viewership and income. Pratt, who engages with American users on the app, believes that TikTok’s viability may be at risk without American users. “The US as a country is so powerful and big, and I don’t think TikTok can keep going if there’s no American users on the app,” said Pratt. Despite these uncertainties, the UK has reiterated its commitment to working with social media platforms to ensure data security and protection standards are upheld.

In summary, the UK government has affirmed that there are no immediate plans to ban TikTok in the country, in contrast to the US’s impending ban. The continuous challenges faced by TikTok raise concerns among users and content creators, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the platform’s future in different regions. It remains to be seen how TikTok will navigate these regulatory hurdles while maintaining its user base and functionality worldwide.
