Former Scottish Conservative MSP Michelle Ballantyne has found herself in the midst of a race row following her association with a Facebook page known for promoting far-right content and racism. The page, which supports Nigel Farage’s Reform party, has around 1400 members and features posts targeting prominent political figures such as former first minister Humza Yousaf and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar.
The controversial posts on the Facebook page included derogatory comments about Humza Yousaf, suggesting he should be sent back, comparisons of Keir Starmer to Adolf Hitler, and negative remarks about a new mosque. The page also shared links to videos by Alistair McConachie, a former UKIP organiser known for his extreme views and connections to individuals with far-right backgrounds.
Georgie Laming from HOPE not hate expressed concerns about the group, stating that it is filled with racism and extremism. Scottish Labour Deputy Leader Jackie Baillie called for the Tories and Reform UK to denounce such content, emphasising that there is no place for such bile in Scottish politics.
Ballantyne, who previously vied for the Scottish Conservative leadership and later led Reform UK Scotland, distanced herself from the group, claiming she has not been active in its administration or content monitoring. She clarified that she no longer holds an active role in politics. The Reform UK party spokesperson reiterated that the group in question is not affiliated with the party.
