King Charles III has praised a 99-year-old D-Day veteran during his recent visit to the Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen. The monarch met with Jim Glennie, a former soldier from the regiment, who landed at Sword Beach on D-Day at the age of 18. Mr. Glennie, who was wounded in action and taken prisoner during the war, is described as a “great example” by the King. The visit to the museum, which commemorates the history of the regiment, allowed the King to interact with former soldiers and learn about their experiences.
During his visit, King Charles III expressed admiration for Mr. Glennie, highlighting his bravery and service to the country. The King’s interaction with the veteran, who is also featured in a portrait at the museum, was warm and appreciative. Mr. Glennie’s son shared anecdotes of his father’s past interactions with royalty, including serving Princess Anne, which added a personal touch to the meeting.
In addition to his time with Mr. Glennie, the King was shown a First World War heirloom, a kilt worn by Captain Alexander Manson, a soldier who was initially declared dead but later reclassified as wounded in action. This historical artefact, along with letters and notices from the time, provided a poignant insight into the sacrifices made by past generations.
Colonel Charlie Sloan, the museum’s chairman, emphasised the significance of the museum in preserving the legacy of the regiment. The King’s visit underscored the importance of remembering and honouring the service and sacrifices of those who have served in the military.
