Man suffered serious head injuries after row outside Motherwell pub

A man sustained serious head injuries following a dispute outside a pub in Motherwell, resulting in the appearance of 22-year-old first offender Cameron McGowan at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday. McGowan pleaded guilty to assaulting Adrian Gibson, leading to severe injury and permanent impairment by pushing him to the ground on Muir Street. The incident occurred shortly after 2 am on December 9, 2023, when an argument ensued between McGowan, residing in Green Gardens, Cleland, and Mr. Gibson.

Daisy Bentley, the prosecutor, revealed that McGowan pushed Mr. Gibson, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement. Despite immediately rendering assistance along with pub staff, Mr. Gibson suffered a fractured skull and brain bleeding, requiring hospitalization. The court learned that Mr. Gibson continued to experience balance, smell, taste, and eyesight complications following the incident. McGowan explained to the police that he acted impulsively when Mr. Gibson called him a name, resulting in the shove.

During the court proceedings, defence lawyer Eddie Robertson highlighted McGowan’s previous clean record. Sentencing was postponed for background assessments and an electronic tagging evaluation scheduled for the next month.
