A £350,000 transformation project has kicked off in Lanark to revitalise the town centre. The Lanark High Street Public Realm Improvement Project, initiated by South Lanarkshire Council and Discover Lanark, is receiving funding from the Scottish Government’s Place-Based Investment Programme and The Levenseat Trust. The project aims to enhance various streetscape elements near the historic Tolbooth by introducing new seating, upgraded lighting, and raised planters, creating a safe and inviting multi-purpose area for the local community.
One of the unique features of the project is the incorporation of elements reflecting Lanark’s rich heritage, such as granite surfacing with 16 roundels designed by artist Steve Pardue to celebrate the town trades from the Burgh Records of 1653. Additionally, new signage detailing the history of the area including the Tolbooth and illustrations by artist Ronnie Cruwys will be included. The project will also involve relocating and interpreting a replica March stone and commemorating a water pump in memory of Janice Plenderleith.
Antonia Pompa, Business Improvement District manager at Discover Lanark, expressed confidence that the initiative will add a new dynamic to the historical town centre. She highlighted the community’s positive response during consultations, indicating excitement as the plan comes to fruition. Councillor Robert Brown, chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources committee, praised the project for its imaginative and sensitive design that honours Lanark’s public realm while offering a fresh community space with bespoke touches reflecting the town’s history.
The renovation is set to be completed by the end of April without impacting the road network, and efforts will be made to minimise disruptions to pedestrian walkways. Access to shops and properties will be maintained throughout the construction period, with potential changes to access routes as the project progresses.
