West Lothian Council Honours Paralympic Gold Medallist Nathan Macqueen
West Lothian Council recently hosted a special event to honour the exceptional achievements of Paralympic Gold medallist Nathan Macqueen, an archer from Addiewell. The 33-year-old athlete, who won gold in the Compound Open mixed team archery event at the Paris Paralympic Games, was invited to West Lothian Civic Centre in Livingston along with his wife Tara by Provost Cathy Muldoon.
Nathan’s remarkable success in 2024 was celebrated at the event, where he was recognised for his outstanding performance at the summer games. Apart from winning the Gold medal with his teammate Jodie Grinham, Nathan also secured a seventh-place finish in the Men’s Individual Compound Para Archery competition. Adding to his accolades, Nathan was honoured with an MBE in King Charles’s New Year Honours list.
Prior to his Gold medal win at the Paralympic Games, Nathan had already made a mark in the sporting world by becoming a double European Paralympic Champion and attaining the title of World Number One in 2023. His journey to success began after a life-altering motorbike accident at the age of 18, which left him paralysed from the waist down. Despite the challenges he faced, Nathan’s determination led him to explore various competitive sports, representing Scotland in Wheelchair Basketball and transitioning to archery, a sport he had cherished since childhood.
Reflecting on his achievements, Nathan expressed his gratitude for the recognition he has received, acknowledging the support and encouragement from the community. Provost Cathy Muldoon commended Nathan for his resilience, hard work, and talent, highlighting him as an inspirational figure for aspiring athletes, especially those with disabilities.
Nathan’s commitment to his sport is evident through his rigorous training schedule, supported by the UK Institute of Sport at Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre in Shropshire. As he looks ahead to the formal presentation of his MBE in March, Nathan remains dedicated to inspiring others through his passion for archery and his unwavering perseverance.
