Dumfries’ Northern Lights Show Receives Rave Reviews
Residents and visitors alike have been captivated by the spectacular light show displayed in Dumfries over the weekend. As part of a town-wide trail starting the Big Burns Supper celebrations, five breathtaking installations were set up around Dumfries, including the White Lights at the Whitesands. Utilising light, sound, and projection, the installations provided an immersive experience for attendees, showcasing hidden gems of Dumfries to an appreciative audience.
From Friday to Sunday evenings, visitors from Dumfries and Galloway, as well as beyond, were able to explore the trail at their leisure, with key sites including the Burns Mausoleum, Greyfriars Church, and Dumfries High Street. The Big Burns Supper event took advantage of the recent increase in Northern Lights sightings across Dumfries and Galloway by inviting residents to submit their aurora borealis photographs. These images were then projected onto High Street buildings, creating a mesmerising visual display accompanied by a performance from the Dumfries Community Choir.
The trail also featured notable locations such as the Burns Mausoleum and the Suspension Bridge over the River Nith, with each site offering a unique experience for attendees. Greyfriars Church provided a poignant moment for visitors to light a candle in memory of loved ones, while an interactive light show at the former Jumping Jacks nightclub added a contemporary twist to the historical trail.
Graham Main, executive producer of Big Burns Supper, expressed his delight at the successful event, highlighting the significant increase in aurora borealis activity over the past year. EventScotland, a part of VisitScotland, funded the sound and light show, further enhancing Scotland’s cultural heritage through immersive experiences like the Northern Lights display.
