McVitie’s owner sold former Glasgow factory site before ‘secret’ donation to city council

Pladis, the owner of the McVitie’s biscuit brand, has come under scrutiny after it was revealed that they sold a former factory site in Glasgow before making a £1m ‘secret’ donation to Glasgow City Council. This donation came two years after the closure of the historic McVitie’s factory in Tollcross, resulting in the loss of over 400 jobs. The commercial site in Tollcross was sold to a property developer in a multi-million pound deal, and the donation to the council was made anonymously. However, the company’s identity was later disclosed by media outlets, prompting criticism from the GMB union and calls for transparency from the council.

The GMB union, which represented many of the workers affected by the factory closure, criticised Pladis for their actions, stating that the donation offered little comfort to the workers who lost their jobs. The union called on Glasgow City Council to end the secrecy surrounding the terms of the donation and to ensure that the local community benefits from it. The closure of the factory was met with opposition from local politicians, and efforts to save the jobs through a Scottish Government taskforce were unsuccessful.

Despite the closure of the factory, Pladis expressed its intention to leave a lasting legacy that would benefit the local community. The company’s donation to the council was intended to support the area where the factory was once located. The site of the former factory is now undergoing redevelopment, with older buildings being demolished and plans for commercial use in the works. The future use of the site remains undecided.

In response to the criticism and calls for transparency, Pladis stated that they would explore how the donation could benefit the local community. Glasgow City Council was approached for comment on the matter. The closure of the McVitie’s factory marked the end of an era for the historic site, known for producing beloved biscuit brands like Digestives and Hobnobs.

In conclusion, the closure of the McVitie’s factory and subsequent actions by Pladis have brought attention to the impact on the local community and the need for clearer communication and accountability in corporate dealings. The situation highlights the challenges of balancing economic interests with social responsibility and underscores the importance of addressing the needs of workers and communities affected by such decisions.
