Scots doctors refused to remove young woman’s ovarian tumours ‘until symptoms worsened’

Doctors in Scotland have come under fire for their decision to not remove ovarian tumours from a young woman until her symptoms worsened. Jemma Bruce, a 22-year-old from Irvine in North Ayrshire, has been advocating for costly private surgery to have her reproductive organs removed after feeling neglected and silenced by the NHS medical professionals.

Having been diagnosed with two benign ovarian tumours at the ages of 13 and 21, Jemma recounted her frustration at doctors from University Hospital Crosshouse for opting to delay surgery until her symptoms escalated. Despite suffering from severe pain that led to daily vomiting due to the second tumour, Jemma claimed that she was repeatedly denied surgical intervention. It wasn’t until nine months later, in an emergency situation, that the tumour was removed, revealing that it had started to cut off blood supply to her ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Expressing her disappointment with the healthcare system, Jemma highlighted the emotional and physical toll the ordeal had taken on her. She described feeling silenced and ignored, leading to a sense of desperation for basic medical assistance. The excruciating pain left her housebound and prompted her to abandon her college studies. Jemma shared that her experiences have instilled a fear of seeking medical help and facing potential dismissal by healthcare professionals.

To address her ongoing health challenges, Jemma is raising funds for private surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes, a procedure the NHS has declined to provide. Her GoFundMe campaign aims to raise £7,500 for the surgery and related costs. Despite the procedure ending her chances of bearing children naturally, Jemma remains resolute in her decision, emphasising the significant impact it would have on her quality of life and well-being.

Jemma’s story underscores the challenges faced by young women navigating reproductive health issues and the importance of advocating for individual healthcare needs. Her determination to seek alternative solutions following a lack of support from the NHS sheds light on the complexities of accessing specialised medical care and the emotional toll it can take on individuals. Jemma’s resilience in the face of adversity serves as an inspiration for others in similar situations to speak up and pursue the necessary care they deserve.
