Police Provide Significant Update on Teen Missing for 6 Years
Alex Batty, who went missing in 2017 while abroad with his mother and grandfather, has received a major update from the police. The Greater Manchester Police have announced the closure of the criminal investigation into the case due to lack of support from Alex and his family for prosecution, as reported by the Mirror.
At the age of 11, Alex disappeared in 2017 when his mum, Melanie, and grandad, David, did not bring him back from an overseas vacation. They embarked on an unconventional nomadic lifestyle, frequently moving between Spain and France. Alex managed to escape on December 13, 2023, after a dispute with his mum prompted him to flee the remote farmhouse in the French Pyrenees where they were residing. He made his way to a police station near Toulouse, about 70 miles away, after being picked up by a delivery driver while wandering along a country road near Chalabre at 3 am. He was also seen at a French diner.
Now 19, Alex resides in Oldham with his grandmother, Susan Caruana, readjusting to life in the UK. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the closure of the investigation into his disappearance between September 30, 2017, and December 13, 2023, as there is no viable prospect of criminal prosecution.
Detective Superintendent Matt Walker, who oversaw the case, emphasised their commitment to ensuring Alex’s safety and thoroughly investigating the circumstances of his disappearance. He mentioned consulting with various partners throughout, such as the Crown Prosecution Service and the National Crime Agency, to reach the decision to conclude the investigation without pursuing criminal charges.
Reflecting on his six years away, Alex shared insights into his transient lifestyle and limited social interactions, highlighting the challenges of living in isolation in various locations.
