Balaclava wearing Paisley thug could face jail after being caught with knife and two knuckle dusters

A Paisley resident wearing a balaclava could be facing imprisonment after he was apprehended in a Renfrewshire street on Halloween with a knife and two knuckle dusters. Rafal Swiatkowski was reportedly behaving aggressively towards motorists on Mill Street in Paisley in October last year. When police officers stopped the 47-year-old, he appeared suspicious and reluctant to remove his hands from his pockets. Subsequent searches revealed a knuckle duster in each pocket and a flick knife in his possession. Paisley Sheriff Court was informed by procurator fiscal depute Abigail McKenna that Swiatkowski was seen on Mill Street wearing a balaclava, displaying aggressive behaviour towards passing drivers around 11 pm on October 31. Police stopped him, observed him placing his hands in his jacket pockets, and hesitating to remove them when instructed. Items found in his possession included a black knuckle duster in each pocket and a black flick knife in his trouser pocket. Following his arrest, Swiatkowski initially made no plea when he appeared in court from custody on November 1. His motion for bail was contested by the prosecution, leading to his continued remand in custody. Swiatkowski eventually pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing offensive weapons in a public place. His defence agent, Paul Lynch, requested the preparation of reports and reserved mitigation. Sheriff Thomas Ward expressed the seriousness of the matter due to Swiatkowski’s prior convictions for similar offences, prompting him to call for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment. Swiatkowski is currently remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on February 14. The incident underscores the importance of law enforcement in ensuring public safety and the consequences individuals may face for carrying offensive weapons. It serves as a reminder of the legal repercussions of such actions and the role of the justice system in maintaining law and order in society.
