Perthshire Students Embrace Golf with Free Lessons at Taymouth Castle Estate
A pilot program offering free golf lessons to primary school pupils in Perthshire has been initiated at the Taymouth Castle estate. Collaborating with Perth and Kinross Active Schools, Taymouth Castle has introduced junior golf taster sessions for students from Breadalbane Academy in Aberfeldy. The sessions, integrated into the students’ regular Physical Education curriculum, are conducted by experienced PGA Professionals from Taymouth Castle. The primary goal of the program is to increase children’s access to golf while promoting their physical and mental wellbeing.
The pilot program kicked off this month with pupils engaging in four taster sessions focusing on skill development, physical fitness, and enjoyment. If successful, the initiative is set to expand to other primary schools in Perthshire, with over 100 pupils expected to benefit from the program. Gregor Ross, coordinator of Live Active Leisure Active Schools, expressed gratitude towards Taymouth Castle for offering a four-week block of golf activities to P1 to P4 pupils from Breadalbane Academy. Following this phase, selected senior pupils will have the opportunity to be mentored by Taymouth Castle PGA professionals to continue golf activities as an extracurricular club.
Active Schools, a Scottish Government initiative aimed at promoting physical activity among school children, acts as a vital link between sports organizations like Taymouth Castle and schools to facilitate sports delivery within and outside the curriculum. In the Perth and Kinross region, the Active Schools team operates under Live Active Leisure, the council’s leisure trust.
The collaboration between Taymouth Castle and Active Schools not only promotes the enjoyment of golf among young pupils but also provides a platform for senior students to develop coaching skills. By engaging seniors in coaching roles, the initiative aims to instill leadership qualities and provide opportunities for personal development through coaching certifications like the Duke of Edinburgh and the Saltire Award.
