Essential roadworks have been announced for the “wee bridge” route connecting Hamilton and East Kilbride, which will impact commuters from January 27 to January 31. The resurfacing project on Newhousemill Road will involve a full closure from the junction with Muttonhole Road in Hamilton to the junction with Lismore in East Kilbride. This closure means that there will be no traffic access across Newhousemill Bridge during this period.
The South Lanarkshire Council has issued a warning to nearby residents about potential significant delays due to these essential roadworks. The council officials have scheduled the resurfacing project to begin at 8 am on Monday, January 27, aiming to complete by 4 pm on Friday, January 31, subject to weather conditions and available resources.
Motorists travelling from Hamilton to East Kilbride are advised to follow the official diversion route, which will take them via Parkneuk Road and Sydes Brae to the East Kilbride expressway and A726 Strathaven Road. Traffic marshals and site staff will be present throughout the project to assist drivers and ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
Colin Park, Head of Roads at South Lanarkshire Council, expressed apologies for any inconvenience caused by the roadworks and encouraged road users to plan their journeys accordingly. He emphasised the importance of following the diversion route and allowing extra time for travel during the project. The council hopes that these road improvements will be appreciated by all once the works are finalised.
Additionally, residents and businesses in the area will be granted access as much as possible during the road closure. However, there may be instances where local access and egress could face notable delays depending on the progress of the works on-site. The council assures that traffic marshals and site staff will be available to provide guidance and support where necessary throughout the working day.
