Glasgow Student Becomes First Ring Doorbell Voice with Scottish Accent
In a groundbreaking achievement, a Scottish student has been chosen to be the voice featured on Ring doorbells with a Scottish accent. Azkah Sardar, a 23-year-old medical student from Glasgow, won a competition to become Ring’s Voice of the Nation, making her the first person with a Scottish accent to be showcased on Ring doorbells.
Azkah stood out among 300 candidates at auditions held at Silverburn shopping centre in Glasgow, following similar casting calls in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and online entries through social media channels like Instagram and TikTok, as well as the Ring app. Her Scottish accent Quick Reply is now available to download, with a specially recorded Scots language message just in time for Burns night.
Expressing her excitement, Azkah said, “It means a lot to be chosen as Ring’s Voice of the Nation. I thought it was a really cool idea as it hadn’t been done before, so I thought I’d go along and just give it a shot. Scotland isn’t a huge place, but we have so much to offer. We’re not as represented as we should be, and it’s amazing that Ring is making steps towards making it happen. Not many big brands go the extra mile to use regional accents in their technology, so I think this campaign has been fantastic.”
Scottish radio DJ and television presenter Edith Bowman, who helped judge the auditions, praised Azkah’s energy, enthusiasm, and personality, stating, “The Glasgow accent is one of many beautiful varieties north of the border, and we hope to hear it on doorbells across the UK.”
Ring’s Quick Replies, acting as an answering machine for the door, can now feature Azkah’s warm and friendly Scottish voice, in line with the company’s aim to celebrate regional dialects. With 44% of people finding the Scottish accent among the friendliest in the UK, this initiative has been well-received.
