Optometrist says supermarket superfood is even better for your eyes than carrots

Tuscan kale, or cavolo nero, is gaining recognition as a superfood that is even more beneficial for eye health than carrots, according to optometrist Neil Laird. While carrots have long been praised for their beta-carotene content and its positive impact on vision, cavolo nero is rich in lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene, essential nutrients for eye health. Studies have shown that these nutrients found in cavolo nero can help prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and protect the eyes from the harmful effects of blue light.

Lutein and zeaxanthin, in particular, act as natural shields for the retina by absorbing damaging blue light and reducing oxidative stress, making them crucial for maintaining good vision over time. Laird, a Specialist Optometrist at Pure Optical, highlights the superior qualities of cavolo nero in preserving visual health. He recommends incorporating this leafy green vegetable into daily meals in various ways, such as adding it to soups, smoothies, or stir-fries.

To maximize the benefits of cavolo nero, Laird suggests pairing it with foods high in healthy fats like olive oil, salmon, eggs, or avocado, as lutein and zeaxanthin are fat-soluble nutrients. Additionally, Laird emphasises the importance of a varied diet rich in other eye-friendly nutrients from foods like brightly coloured peppers, sweet potatoes, and spinach.

In conclusion, cavolo nero is emerging as a powerful superfood for eye health, offering a diverse range of essential nutrients that can help protect against vision impairment and support overall eye health. By incorporating this nutrient-rich vegetable into daily meals alongside other eye-friendly foods, individuals can take proactive steps towards maintaining optimal eye health and preserving their vision in the long term.
