Elderly Man Loses Life Savings to Scam After Responding to Ad for Free Will Service
Stephen McEwan, a 74-year-old man from Saltcoats, fell victim to a conman and lost his £110,000 life savings after responding to an online advertisement for a free will writing service. The Scottish-based financial advisor he was introduced to promised an interest rate of 7.25% if Stephen invested his savings with another firm. Believing it to be a legitimate opportunity, Stephen trusted the advisor and handed over his entire savings.
When Stephen attempted to withdraw his money, the company refused his request and cut off all communication with him. Feeling devastated and powerless, Stephen is now cautioning others, especially older individuals, to thoroughly vet any company offering free investment services online to ensure their credibility. He expressed his regret, saying, “They’ve taken everything I have. They’ve taken it all.”
Stephen’s ordeal began when he initially contacted a financial advisor through an online ad for free will writing. He was then introduced to another firm that assured him he could withdraw his funds with 90 days notice. Consequently, Stephen invested £110,000, with the expectation of returns from stocks and shares through a Discretionary Unit Trust. However, his attempts to retrieve £80,000 of his investment were fruitless, as the company delayed and eventually ceased contact with him.
Realising he had been scammed, Stephen sought assistance from the police, who advised him to pursue civil action to recover his losses, as the case did not yet qualify for a criminal investigation. Despite the challenges and the likelihood of expensive legal proceedings with uncertain outcomes, Stephen remains determined to seek justice for himself and prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.
In conclusion, Stephen McEwan’s unfortunate experience serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of financial scams targeting vulnerable individuals. It underscores the importance of exercising caution, conducting thorough due diligence, and seeking advice from trusted sources before making significant financial decisions. As scams evolve and become more sophisticated, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and sceptical of enticing offers, especially when it comes to investments and financial transactions.
