A notorious drug kingpin was apprehended in the UK after arriving in London with his stylish wife to celebrate New Year’s Eve, following a lead from the woman’s online posts. Luis Grijalba, wanted in the United States for trafficking cocaine from Costa Rica, had come to London with his partner Estefania McDonald Rodriguez. American Drug Enforcement Administration agents had been monitoring Rodriguez’s social media updates showcasing their luxurious trips to the UK and Paris. In one photo, the couple posed in front of the Eiffel Tower, and later, they were seen near London Bridge. National Crime Agency officers were able to swiftly arrest Grijalba.
Randall Zúñiga from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency noted that Grijalba usually travelled separately from his wife on previous occasions but seemed less cautious this time. Rodriguez’s frequent trips abroad were documented on social media, providing crucial leads for the DEA, who collaborated with the UK authorities for the arrest. Despite not facing any ongoing legal issues in Costa Rica, Grijalba has faced two assassination attempts in his home country. He is currently contesting extradition to the US, while Costa Rican officials have expressed willingness to collaborate with US authorities in seizing his assets.
