Calls for Lifetime Ban for Falconer Who Kept Birds in ‘Sickening Conditions’
Conservationist Dave Anderson has made a fervent plea for a lifetime ban on a wildlife centre owner after discovering birds being kept in deplorable conditions. The Scottish Eagle Centre, owned by Andrew Knowles Brown, 69, located in Elvanfoot, Lanarkshire, came under scrutiny as Anderson, a renowned eagle expert, expressed shock at the distressing state of affairs. Following a thorough investigation by the SSPCA, falconer Knowles Brown was found guilty of housing as many as 90 eagles and other large, valuable birds in unhygienic conditions.
Anderson was deeply disturbed after inspecting the premises and was compelled to cradle a tawny eagle while a vet had to euthanise it due to its severe injuries. Reflecting on the ordeal, Anderson remarked, “The bird’s wings were badly damaged, it had been suffering for a long time. What sickened me most was that Knowles Brown showed no remorse.” The severity of the situation led Anderson to call for stringent action against Knowles Brown to prevent any recurrence of such heinous crimes.
Following the court’s proceedings at Lanark Sheriff Court, where Sheriff Diane Turner deferred sentencing until June to assess improvements in the aviaries, concerns have arisen that Knowles Brown may be allowed to keep some birds due to a purported lack of alternative facilities. Anderson strongly opposes this notion, emphasising that Knowles Brown should never be entrusted with the care of large birds again. He hopes that stringent measures will be enforced to ensure the safety and well-being of the birds under his care are never compromised in the future.
