Hundreds of homes in Dumfries and Galloway are enduring their fourth day without electricity as the aftermath of Storm Eowyn lingers. Scottish Power Energy Networks personnel are striving to reestablish power to most households by Monday, but some residences might have to cope without electricity for an extended period.
The intense storm, the fiercest in a decade, struck the region with winds exceeding 90mph on Friday, resulting in fallen trees obstructing roads and causing power lines to collapse. Beginning on Friday morning, homes across the area started experiencing power outages, with persistent strong winds throughout the weekend hindering restoration efforts. As of Monday morning, the Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) map indicates ongoing power cuts across the region.
Efforts are underway to restore power to the majority of affected households by the end of Monday, although some residents may have to wait until Tuesday. In response to the situation, food trucks were stationed in Whithorn and Johnstonebridge over the weekend to provide meals for those without power. SPEN disclosed that nearly 200,000 properties in central and southern Scotland lost power, with around 9,000 properties still awaiting reconnection.
Aileen Rourk, SP Energy Networks Scotland’s distribution director, mentioned, “Our dedicated engineers have continued to work through the night to get many more people back on supply. Unfortunately, the severity of the storm and damage, combined with the continued poor weather conditions, means in some areas it could take several days to restore power.”
In addition to restoration efforts, provisions such as hotel accommodations, food vouchers, and food trucks have been arranged for the most severely impacted areas. Support from local authorities and partners has facilitated the establishment of warm spaces where individuals can charge devices and access hot meals and drinks. Collaboration with the Scottish Government and local services is ongoing to provide assistance to customers.
