RSPCA Warns Many Pet Owners Unaware of New Law with £500 Fine
Since June last year, it has been a legal requirement for cats over 20 weeks old in England to be microchipped. The RSPCA has issued a warning, highlighting that owners who fail to comply could face a fine of up to £500. Despite this law being in place for almost six months, a recent survey by the animal welfare charity revealed that one in 10 people are still unaware of this new regulation.

Alice Potter, a cat welfare expert at the RSPCA, emphasised the significance of microchipping for all cats, whether indoor or outdoor. She stressed that microchipping is crucial for reuniting lost or injured cats with their owners, and it also helps prevent neglect and abandonment cases. Potter urged cat owners to explore affordable microchipping options, such as veterinary health plans or discounted services offered by charities like the RSPCA.
Furthermore, the RSPCA is advocating for mandatory microchipping of cats in Wales and recommending that pet owners struggling with costs visit their Cost of Living Hub for assistance. It is essential for owners to keep their contact details updated on a pet microchipping database to ensure their feline’s safety.
