Police in Blantyre made a concerning discovery when trying to identify a man found on a street in the area. It was revealed that the man, identified as Charles McClinton, was carrying a knife. The incident unfolded when officers responded to a call about the man, who was heavily intoxicated, sparking worries for his welfare. McClinton, aged 50 and residing in Poplar Place, Blantyre, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court where he pleaded guilty to carrying a knife without a reasonable excuse in St Andrews Court on May 9 the previous year.
The court heard that upon arrival, the police found McClinton in an inebriated state, making communication difficult. During a search for identification, officers discovered a knife sleeve in his hooded jumper, with a knife found underneath him. Additionally, a bank card with McClinton’s name was also found in his possession. An initial allegation of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner after being taken to Hairmyres Hospital was dropped during the proceedings.
Despite McClinton admitting to previous convictions, his defence lawyer, Laura Kiernan, highlighted that he had maintained a clean record for five years leading up to this incident. Kiernan also mentioned McClinton’s heart condition affecting his mobility and requested the court to consider alternative sentencing options rather than custody. Sheriff John Hamilton decided to defer the sentence until March to allow for background reports and permitted McClinton to remain on bail.
