West Lothian Pays Tribute to Holocaust Victims in Memorial Day Event
West Lothian Council leader Lawrence Fitzpatrick led a moving memorial event at the Howden Park Centre to honour the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. The event, which took place on Monday, January 27th, marked the annual Holocaust Memorial Day. This day is dedicated to remembering the millions of individuals who lost their lives during the Holocaust under Nazi Persecution, as well as in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, and Bosnia.
The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day was “For a Better Future!” The event at Howden Park Centre in Livingston saw the participation of hundreds of school pupils. Pupils from schools such as Armadale Academy, Broxburn Academy, St Margaret’s Academy, and West Calder High School delivered readings and presentations, alongside performances from the West Lothian School’s Flute Ensemble. Nick Silk from the Edinburgh Liberal Jewish Community and a member of the West Lothian Faith Group led remembrance prayers to honour the victims.
Provost Cathy Muldoon, who concluded the event, highlighted the significance of individuals’ roles in preventing such atrocities from happening again. She emphasised the importance of remembering those lost in the Holocaust as the years pass. The memorial event provided a poignant and powerful reminder to all attendees about the collective responsibility in ensuring such tragic events are never repeated.
The commemoration was a solemn occasion that brought the community together to reflect on the atrocities of the past and the importance of working towards a future free from such horrors.
